Level 3 is the first of 5 considered an automated driving system and is classified as “conditional automation”. The expected respondent is the driving system and not the driver. The 5 levels are:

  • Level 1: Driver assistance
  • Level 2: Partial automation
  • Level 3: Conditional automation
  • Level 4: Partial automation
  • Level 5: Full automation

The Traffic Jam Pilot was awarded a safety certification by the Japanese government in November.
